The Golden Palace
Saloon
The Coca-Cola Golden
Palace Saloon (later called the Red Garter) was a major entertainment
venue at Legend City, featuring a rich variety of
performers of just about every imaginable
kind, originally including the ventriloquism act of future Miss America Vonda
Kay Van Dyke. The Copper Tones barber shop quartet was another early act at the
Palace, led by West High School senior Rick Mitchell.
Meanwhile, Ed and Nanci Keener
performed their magic act at Legend City for many months, working the stage along with
Sandy Gibbons
and Vonda Kay at both the Golden Palace and Lagoon Amphitheater. Many of the black and white images
on this page are courtesy of the Keeners, who appear in the photos along
with Sandy, his assistant Sandra Dirickson, Vonda Kay and a second barbershop quartet known as the "Devilaires."
Incidentally, Sandra appeared with Sandy on "Dialing For Dollars" on KPHO-TV in
the mid '60s. Here also appears three color photos of the Golden Palace from
the archives of Louis Crandall. Click on the thumbnail images for a closer view.
Let the good times roll.
